Specific Edition of Only You Can Save Mankind

Postby Jagra » Sat Mar 28, 2020 03:17 pm

Hi I was looking for some info on a specific edition of Only You Can Save Mankind, like does this version even exist? Something I did a while ago was make a list of Terry Pratchett books that had extra content in them, like the extra stories in the Snuff and Raising Steam first editions or the later versions of The Folklore of Discworld which added new folklore. This version of OYCSM has a cover that has 'Extras Inside' in the bottom right hand corner like the US paperback covers of 'The Amazing Maurice' and 'A Hat Full of Sky.'

It is supposedly published in the US by Turtleback Books in 2006, Library Binding format, isbn: 9781417796151. One of the big problems I had in trying to find a copy is that the isbn listed for it also appears on the rear of a different version of OYCSM published by HarperTrophy in 2006, which in the interior of the book has a different isbn of 9780060541873. I am simply curious as to what the 'Extras Inside' are like in the other two like this; but have been given a bit of a runaround by the same isbn being present on two different editions.

Seems as if it does! I just took a quick peek on Abebooks.com and there are a handful with that cover.

The cover is by Dan Panosian and is used by the 2005 Harpercollins publication of the book, isbn 9780060541866, but the version I am looking for more info on has this cover but is published by Turtleback books and has the 'extras inside' label on the corner. It also has more pages than the Harpercollins version: 224 compared to 208.

You may have done this already:

I searched for Turtleback Books. They are a division of Perfection Learning.

From their website:

Working directly with wholesalers and retailers, we offer a wide selection of titles for the demanding library and classroom environments. Turtleback offers the largest and best selection of prebound books exclusively to wholesalers and resellers serving the library and school markets. Our list has been developed with our customers in mind, and our customers provide valuable insight into how our catalog should grow and evolve. They provide a long list of distributors, none of which is Amazon, lol.

I downloaded their current catalogue and this is the Pratchett list:

Turtleback ISBN Publisher ISBN Pub Date Publisher Imprint Title
9780606318389 9780062225672 1/29/2013 Harpercollins HarperCollins The Color Of Magic

9780613657570 0060012358......... 8/12/2008 Harpercollins HarperTrophy The Amazing Maurice And His Educated Rodents
9780613673426 9780062307408 7/29/2014 Harpercollins Torch Night Watch

Only You Can Save Mankind isn't listed, which is odd because the company offers a lifetime guarantee on their bindings.

I also searched AddAll, which searches 22 online stores including US, Canada, UK, Germany, Australia, France.
ISBN 9781417796151 was not found.

If this book exists, it's going to be in a library somewhere. After this embuggerance dies down and libraries and schools reopen, we will have to embark on a treasure hunt.

Thanks for the info phalarope, yeah its strange it doesn't appear on the Turtleback books website but I have seen it listed on several other websites like goodreads, bookfinder and Amazon (ironic given that its not a distributor). This is one of main reasons as to why I'm not sure as to whether or not it is a published work as well as the given isbn for it appearing on the back of a different book.
