Polishing chickens

OK, I was there but i cannot remember how this phrase came to be!

Can anyone help?
This is my sort of recipe book. "Wrap the pastry in a damp cloth and chill for 20 minutes." Don't mind if I do.

Rob was on stage with Marc Burrows, during bedtime stories, when the comment was made. I can't quite remember the context but I think it was a throw away comment about the things they got up to when taking a break from writing. It just stuck and a Facebook Group, 'Chicken Polishers' was created within hours of it being said. :)

It was an iron the dog throwaway line, that had 'other' interpretations
Using your old computer to shop for a new computer online is rather cruel

I got the impression that 'polishing the chickens' is a euphamism for hanging out pretending to be busy while talking or thinking things over.
Outmaneuvered on all counts, I opt to change the rules.

I'm pretty sure that's how it was intended but, given the filthy minds of the audience ...
