Maybe Stephen Briggs could take Stephen Fry's role? since he has the right first name :P

If you're going with actual Discworld characters perhaps Vetinari could be the host?

Or perhaps official guests can compete against fan teams?

Just a bit of cross-reffing as Eelco will looking in here sometime after the Con committee meeting yesterday

I suppose the question becomes, are we looking for a pannel that can give "Quite Interesting" Roundworld facts related to Discworld (like in The Truth, that the street flooding thing, really happened in Seattle) or do you want "Quite Interesting" Discworld facts.

In the first case you want people like Pat Harkin, Ian Stewart, Jack Cohen etc...ie...people with Roundworld smarts
In the second case you'd be better with Uberfans (which is probably more like the UU Challenge type contestants)

The Stephen Fry character doesn't need to be, actually, intelligent as he will have the answers in front of him/her. (personally I always saw Fry as making a great Ridcully). Also, Alan Davies is there to add comic relief or as he admits himself "make everyone else look intelligent".

Also, you have to decide if this is a "guest" event, ie a different way of doing a guest interview/Q&A/klatch (a way of getting the guests talking/interacting about things/in a way that they wouldn't usually in a standard interview)...
...or a competition, like UU Challenge/Wyrdest Link with winners and losers (possibly more serious than QI when people are really competing) etc...
...or an entertainment (like a skit) with Discworld Characters (In which case Nobby as Alan Davies!!! )

Stephen Fry - Ridcully? - good grief no he's too much the gentleman! - Ridcully needs to be a loud " Huntin', fishin', Shootin' " type - Brian Blessed for me!!
Jack and Bernard on the panel? - wonderful!!!
Definitely a mixture of guests and committee/uber-fans. A Vetinari would be too 'severe' a questionmaster Dr. Pat would be great IMHO! :bounce:

I'm thinking Melchit from Blackadder, plenty of bluster, booming and bloodsports but with the feeling behind the bluster is someone who, actually, might be intelligent (always my problem with Brian Blessed being touted for the part is Ridcully should be clever underneath)

True, but even there he's a gentleman. You've got to remember Ridcully is a Ramtops country boy!

or am I wrong?

Hi all,

Since I have been mentioned a few times already, let's make an appearance :-)
I am not actually active on this forum (this is my first posting) or any other forums at the moment, so while I try to drop by now and then, I might miss out on important details. If, for whatever reason, you think there is something I need to read, please use the programme@dwcon.org email address. Unless your trying to tell me about the latest developments in Viagra or have a nephew in Nigeria, it will end up in my email and I'll find it.

On to the topic at hand:
Although I would love to be heavily involved with all programme items, I can't, not until they can clone me (and would we want that?). Therefore, your convention needs you! (pointy finger). On the other hand, I can try to help things get moving as much as I can. I really like the idea, it can be something very nice and enjoyable for quite a few people so I will do my best to facilitate it. It would probably become even more enjoyable and for more people if we could get a few guests as panel members, so that is definitely an option.
You have been discussing which guests already I saw, and I agree that the best people for the panel will depend a bit on the type of questions. Of course, it is more important that the panel members give a witty answer, than that they know the correct answer to every question. I have a few guests in mind, and I'd be happy to ask them as soon as I know we actually can get this organised. I am thinking 2 or 3 guests as panel members and 2 or 3 volunteers as Alan Davies, Stephen Fry and a possible 3 panel member. And a few elves to make questions and judge the answers.

At the moment I have one volunteer who emailed me, and as you can see, we need a few more. If you want to help out, please let me know so i can start asking the guests.

B*gger! The post notifier seems to have been konked out on me as I didn't see any of these until just now.

Just to review so far - has Pat expressed any interest in doing a Fry for this yet (I know Chris has said he'd do an Alan Davies already)? Also it was proposed very much as a Discworld QI so the format will need discifying so we definitely need elves to help out with the questions and scoring side of things.

I think the 2 or 3 guests and 2 or 3 uber fans mix works well and to be clear this would be 'as well as' UU challenge and not 'instead of' - it's probably more of a one off event as well.

Am getting in touch with Eelco on this and something else soon so can pass on any response next week
