So you lot, the Con has been conned and Wadfest has been wadded, so it must be time to consider the NEXT MEETING! September looks good, so available dates would be:-

Sunday 7th,14th,21st or 28th.September 2014

Please indicate your preferences in the usual manner i.e. post below.

Whilst sitting in the sun in Leeds was okay, access and parking are a problem so the general opinion was back to Skipton. Any objections?

The 28th would be a nightmare as it's the Yarndale weekend, held at the auction mart. Last year it was crammed with cars trying to get in and park.

Which is unfortunate as I will be there on the Sat and could have stayed over :D My vote would be for the 14th.

More Dis-Crete or even Ac-Crete, but probably not Ex-Crete :)

As it has a certain symmetrical charm, let's go for Sunday 14th September at the Narrowboat in Skipton, 12 noon onwards! CU there!

Ahem. Since the 14th is an important date for us colonials (and probably a footnote for you) in our mutual history*, I'd like to spend at least part of it with my wonderful British friends. I was toying with the idea of suggesting an attempt at Skyping, as noon BST is 7 am here. Doable? If yes, should there be a practice session with somebody?

*The morning of September 14, 1814 was the end of the bombardment of Fort McHenry and the Battle of Baltimore. Sunrise was at the equivalent of 6:50 am DST, but it had been a rainy night and the morning was not clear at dawn. All British fire stopped at 8 am (the 'dread silence'), and Francis Scott Key would have seen in the spreading daylight the inspiration for the following lines, which form the second verse of The Star-Spangled Banner.

On the shore, dimly seen thro’ the mist of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream;
’Tis the Star Spangled Banner, oh, long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

The first verse, the one we sing, is a question... "Oh say, can you see, by the dawn's early light . . does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave?" *punctuation mine* The second verse is his confirmation 'that the flag was still there'. It's really the one we ought to sing, but don't.

Sorry to hijack the thread, please resume normal service.

Carol, you are an honorary member of the Northern Institute so no worries.Since the British fire stopped at 8am, shall we make that the time, which would be 1pm here? Heather might have made it by then! We shall all have had a small drink too so will be awake!

'nk you. It's nice to be an honorary member of such an august body (although it will be a September body by then).

Wouldn't you be awake at noon anyway? I seem to recall being awake at noon over there.

But a small delay until 1 so that I can make myself presentable wouldn't go amiss. I will probably eschew ginger beer at that hour, though, since the sun won't be over the yardarm here. I will go the way of Gussie Fink-Nottle, and indulge in orange juice. With some banananananana...na in as well.

I will pester Heather to make sure skyping works....

Which reminds me - I must bring that delightful pottery figurine you "accidentally" left in the garden...

Oh, what a relief I'll be there in virtuality rather than physicality!

Heather - leave it in the loo at the Narrowboat.
