Unfortunately unless you have the right (and as Dave says expensive) software it is read-only.
However there is a work around. :D
Display the certificate with the Adobe reader and then click on the Snap-shot icon (camera on toolbar).
Now put the cross-hair in the top left hand corner and drag it to the bottom right. The image will be placed in the clipboard.
Open up your favourite paint application and paste in the image. Then add your details.
Hey Presto.
It worked a treat! :D

Thanks Steve. And thanks Dave!
Proceed, varlet, and let the day be rendered perfect for my benefit!

It may be possible to set a pdf up with a suitable text box where you can type into, even with just the reader. I think I've seen something like that before, although I'm not 100% sure.

My work laptop's due to get upgraded to full acrobat in a couple of weeks time. Once it does I'll see if I can get something cobbled together.

Please, no more Daves on this forum. I get confused with all the current ones already. I get confused easily...

You met an IMPOSTER!

*Nobody* gets away from Dave without buying a copy of his book.
Many people have had to buy *several* copies ...

I have three ... including a Leonard of Quirm Edition!

Oh, BTW ...

I have managed to add my name to the Cert in Acrobat (professional) using the help page which says

chose tools
advanced editing
touch up text tool

However I can only add text in the same format as the existing text which for the name and number bit is very small. Though it will let me delete the words name and membership number :?

The rest of the fonts my machine does not recognise and therefore wont let me change or copy

I'm inclined to suggest printing them out and practicing your gothic handwriting!

or as steeljam suggested
