"Special" Covers & Post Cards

Postby Murgatroyd » Wed Jun 01, 2011 11:40 am

I've been trying to collect all the "Special" Covers and Post cards produced by the Emporium over the years... I've put together a list and would welcome any suggestions regarding items that I've missed... The items are not in any defined order. I am not including regular FDC's produced to commemorate the production of new stamps, or consulate envelopes. I am also not including the covers designed and produced under the annual Cover exchange initiative, as there are too many examples out there and no definitive source material available about them.

Oook!

I think you should add to "Boffo Joke mail order Pack" that it's the one with the Boffo-selvedge $2 Merchants' Guild stamp on the envelope with a mint stamp inside, since I think the other kind is still available from the Emporium.

There was also the limited edition 6th Anniversary FDC, which were only given out as prizes.

There were also the three variations of the Rockall covers, and the Red Nose/90-LBE competition covers.

You were right to point out that the Boffo Pack came in two different editions, and I've amended the list.
As for the 6th Birthday prize FDC, it would clearly have a place in a list of FDC's... These special covers are somewhat more than FDC's because they almost all relate directly to happenings and situations derived directly from the Discworld books themselves...

I guess I should make more effort to define what I mean by "Special Cover".
It's not just the fact that they have Discworldly stamps on the cover, or that they tend to be somewhat rarer than the average FDC... The ones I'm talking about are actually Discworld artifacts, and derive in some way from the holy writ itself.

Yes, The Rockall covers were special, for they commemorate a heroic venture... but they only relate to Discworld by virtue of having a Leshp stamp on them as well.
The Red Nosed Patrician / 90 LBE competition covers are also special, but they are collectors items, not Discworld artifacts.

I guess I'll have to add another section for items that fall between being Discworld artifacts and regular FDC's

you put that the Koom Valley Post card came from the city watch pack, but didn't it also come from the SH edition (I think issue 7, but I can't be sure)?
I will be playing Thenardier at the Theatre royal in Margate, Kent from 24th July to 28th. If you are in the area at the time please click the link to get more info:

The Koom Valley post card in the city Watch Warrant card pack is a pictorial representation of Koom Valley... The (City watch) Koom Valley Service post card is a card for watchmen stationed there to communicate with home. They are different items, but thank you for pointing out the fact that my list was somewhat ambiguous on these items.

Oook!

Can someone give me some details about the "God of the Month Club" cover?

I've been combing the forum and the catalog since yesterday, and all I've found is that there were 200 made, and probably originated in 2008.

Was it a Journal special or a thing in its' own right?

I was also going to ask about the "Princess Sheebah" envelope, but I found an old website announcement about it :thumbl:

Gee, I wonder what she's going to try to sell next month on ebay?

Odd you should ask this. I am currently redoing the Covers section of the Catalogue* and have just put together the entry for the God of the Month Club.
Here is the Emporium announcement made on 5th September 2008
The Folklore of Discworld is published on Tuesday and is now available to order from the website. We are offering for sale the rare unsigned copies, with the added bonus of a pack of our postcards - who could resist?
To commemorate the publication we are launching on the forum a new God of the Month Club, which should be a lot of fun and which is open to all. But we are also offering exclusive VIP membership, complete with membership card, to 200 lucky participants. The card and letter of welcome come in a special envelope to which will be attached the Anoia stamp sport, and anyone purchasing the envelope will be eligible to purchase a sheet of Anoia stamps at a reduced price, prior to the stamp's withdrawal at the end of September.
The special envelopes will be available to order from 16.00 British Summer Time on Monday 8 September. Do not miss out on this once in an incarnation opportunity.

The special packs were £18.

* There is still a long way to go so the updates may take a couple of months to complete.
