2008 'other' stamps- can you help write the blurb?

Postby Kelshandra » Sun Aug 31, 2014 04:59 am

What ho, good peoples. I've had a bit of a d'oh moment as I realised my 2008 book missed a few stamps. Because these were stamps not listed in the stamp catalogue (being stickers or commemorative pieces)

I've tried writing the lovely descriptive blurbs that Steve has done in his catalogue for the common stamps but I am not gifted in these ways. Anyone who would like to give it a try either to write their own or to correct my own work would be appreciated.

The Three Roses Commemorative (free with SH Journal 13)
Pastel greens and pinks on white. Three large white roses on a field of pink with the numbers 2008 and three rose symbols repeated in the background. Bordered by an arched green frame, on top two roses in cartouches, between these roses the words ‘The Year’ and a third rose symbol between the two words. The two bottom cartouches with the year 2008 on each side flank the words ‘of the three roses’.

The Samedi Nuit Mort 2008 (free with the LBE of the same name)
?

The 2008 Discworld convention series (the turtle moves)
?

And anything else I've forgotten! I think I have all the other stamps but please point out if I am missing anything!

Must admit the idea of using pseudo-heraldic terms to describe the stamps was fun at first but I quickly realised I had made a rod for my back.
Heraldry has a limited number of objects, colours and positions that the designers of the stamps totally ignore!

Please keep up the good work! I completely rely on your catalogue & would have been utterly at sea trying to catch up on the early years without it! Mind you "catching up" is very much still a work in progress, but thanks to your catalogue my collection is much fuller and my bank balance is much emptier!

Now, is there anything we can do to persuade you to have a section on 'Label' stamps? my favourites are the Dead letter & the Dyslexic society series which are funny, clever and ironic in equal measure :D

Heh, that's the reason why I thought others might like a go- this way we all appreciate what you do that much more :sunny: Plus as is demonstrated in the first post, I'm not great at hearaldic terms.

Maybe the Emberella stamps should have a different method of description.
Poetic:

Within a columned arch on a field of pastel green
Three roses white as snow can be seen
The Year overall between rosettes placed
Of the Three Roses and 2008 below are based

The only thing that I can do less well than mock-heraldry is poetry.

My proof?
There was Convention stamp or two
Whose star studded background was blue
.. I got nut'n

'Tween 20 and 08 grins a skull,
Top-hatted, on a central golden orb.
Along its upper edge reads Samedi Nuit Mort.
Quarter suns red rays beam from each corner
On a field of green girt with a golden border.

If it's dodgy poetry night, may I offer the following

There once was a lass from Bad Ass
Who went for a walk in the grass,
She sat by a stream
And fell into a dream
Of knights on shiny white horses

As she woke from her trance
A young man caught her glance,
For naked was he
As he fled from a bee
And tripped and fell into the gorses

She threw modesty aside
And rushed to his side,
Where in a moment of bliss
They shared their first kiss
Before succumbing to natural forces

That day in the sun
Earned him a burnt bum,
But amid their tryst in the lists
She cried "Alas, for I am no 'Miss'!"
So now they're both getting divorces!

Cor, that's great! Can I pop in in the yearbook?

I've just done:
Sunshine yellow, red and emerald green on white. A red skull wearing a top hat in a yellow circle and flanked by ‘20’ and ‘08’. Arching over the top of the circle, the words ‘SAMEDI NUIT MORT’ in red. The whole circle is bordered in red green and yellow. The four corners have four red dots radiating red rays on a green background and the whole stamp bordered by yellow.
