RIP Ray Tomlinson, 74.
In 1971 he was the first person to send an email. It was sent from him to himself; the two computers were next to each other.
From this test he developed all the apps (a truly a killer app) to hand the entry, sending, receiving and reading emails.
He established the @ sign.

Adrian got an interesting one this week:

As a past ebay customer... sign up and buy our weekly bundle... after you post positive reviews you'd be refunded...

Yeah, dodgy behaviour from a brand new company (registered this year) and we cannot find the ebay shop you claim we are a customer of... How much money would people hand over before they realise they weren't getting their goods?

Just a note on one of the dodgy spams hitting mail boxes over the last few days

Lots of in the format "Court Meeting on June, 17, 2016"

With a ziped attachment, call me a suspicious Ba****d but i doubt opening the attachment is a good idea  . Its the kind of 1 that trys to frighten people into opening quickly without thinking but if you know there is a lot of them about it may may give you a helpful pause.

I usually look at the greeting of a post; "Dear steeljam" or "Dear Client" are immediately deleted.

You may be aware as its hit the mainstream news about the NHS ransomware attack but its not limited to them its being spread by email, so be careful on clicking on any links in emails you are not absolutely sure about. currently at approx 57,000,000 infections in 74 countries as i type this, according to Nick Howes an astronomy buff who also does cyber security who i follow on twitter.

Edited to add this seems to be mostly a windows based problem info on the versions vulnerable and a possible patch below not tried it as a gave up on windows quite a while ago.

Following Alex's post above:

Adrian has received an email from one of the affected hospitals about his test results - He hasn't had any tests at that hospital - everyone be careful about any NHS emails you are not expecting!

Absolutely no idea why that's happened...

Update on the weekend hack - I've heard that some people with the very newest hardware were told they were not allowed security updates last Monday by Microsoft - but by Saturday not only were these people allowed security updates but this was also made available to older systems - all the way back to NT4!!! Please check your systems are upto date and do or begin looking into back up for your PC. (We even got a stuck updater to work!)

If you need advice I'm sure you can get options here

There was a board update recently which changed a few things.

That said I've also no idea what the colours represent.

On the thread subject, I heard earlier that MS were actually using updates back to Windows 2003 to combat this.
Grumpy old mod.
