Falling to Earth

Postby steeljam » Wed Aug 01, 2018 07:55 pm

I am doing a parachute jump for charity.
I have wanted to do one for some time but my weight prevented it. Having lost a lot of flabby fat I can now do one.
To make it more interesting I am doing the Accelerated Freefall Solo Skydive.

Um, have fun!

I wouldn't do it. I'm sure I'd freeze or wet myself or possibly both.
Outmaneuvered on all counts, I opt to change the rules.

well ideally the former then the latter...

Have fun. :D

I can honestly say that I have never had any inclination to throw myself out of a perfectly functioning aircraft (or chuck myself off a perfectly sturdy bridge attached to a rubber band for that matter). I just know I would splash messily.

Better than descending from West Ham Stadium in a wizard's outfit.

I made it to the ground with no splat.
Unfortunately, I discovered when I go there that I was too old for the AFF, so had to do a tandem jump.
The weather was perfect; no wind and clear with some cloud cover.
After getting suited up and fitted with the webbing we were given instructions on what to do and when to do it.
I was team up with Dave, who does 6 months teaching skydiving and 6 months as a ski instructor in France.
The small plane was crowded - three tandem jumps, two cameramen, two singles and two trying out new wingsuits.
We flew around Norfolk and Suffolk and over the coast to reach the 13,000 feet drop height.
And off we went. A short wait on the edge of the door for me to get into the right position and into the blue.
The first second or so I was totally disorientated; spinning. Last time I felt like this was diving from the high board.
Then things settled down and I could enjoy the view. The noise was like being at the front of a heavy-metal concert.
The cameraman flew in for close-ups; his instruction was smile even if you don't feel like it, but I was really enjoying the experience.
Suddenly, there was a jerk* and we slowed and it was silence.
I was given the controls and managed to steer left and right, doing corkscrews and swoops; Fantastic.
Dave took over for the landing.
What an experience. Photos and video to follow.
I will be doing it again.
Thank you to all of you who sponsored me.

I missed out on sponsoring you on this one (in my defence, I've been on quite a lot of medication just recently so am not entirely on top of current events  ) but will definitely sponsor you for your next one. Oh, and would love to see pics or the video :thumbl:

Although am slightly worried that in the 2nd photo, your tandem partner looks like he's trying to release you . . .
