1st Question - Chess

Postby The_Professor_UK » Thu Jun 11, 2020 06:37 am

Is there anywhere a proper DiscWorld Chess set available?

In my minds eye I can see Great A'Tuin and the elephants supporting a flat world inset with the standard 8x8 chess square...

Auditors as Pawns

Lord Vetinari as the king, possibly Granny Weatherwax as queen, that sort of thing. Something that is not only for playing chess with, but also as a piece of living room art.....

Does such a thing exist?

Never heard of an official one, but that doesn't mean that some fan hasn't made one somewhere.

The closest you might get to something official is a Thud set, purchasable from the Discworld Emporium (i.e. the owners of this website!)

That would be probably why I cannot find one

Maybe I shall have to work out how to build one...

Thank you

With a 3D printer it should be (relatively) easy, not a quick job but far easier to make the 12 different pieces you would need (assuming you are happy having the paired pieces the same and one design of pawn per side) and it'll make duplicating each piece far simpler.

And a standard chess board is easy to source, have fun.

If you end up making your own pieces I'd say go one step further and make an assassin piece for the worlds first stealth chess set. The hardest part of that would probably be trying to find/make a custom board with spaces for the slurk.

This I think is my project foe after the luggage.... but I had already started work on designing an Arduino base chess computer, and I wonder if this could be modified,,,,,,

If I cast the turtle out of brass like the Omnians (doorknobs from second hand markets....)

The Elephants out of recycle drink cans....

and resin print the pieces, that could work.....

I can get squares of wood cut to size online, along with any 3d moulding required....

If I use RFID tags in the pieces, I could have an interchangeable set of pieces....

This could be a bit of a cool project.... :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

i made a Discworld costume once - I ended up in Toys R Us for elephants... I had a few problems gluing them to the disc and A'Tuin until we tried cleaning off the release agents from the plastic.

Have a look around see if there are any short-cuts available. Even if they are only placeholders until you have had time to make your own it will help in checking things work.

There was an official Clarecraft chess set, but I don't know how many were made. I think the pawns were Luggages. A very nice - but pricey - option would be to use Micro Arts miniatures. They're around 8 Euros a piece - around £250-300 quid for the set. The fun part might be deciding which character for each piece, and whether the tow sides have the same character. The MicroArt range is short on villains...

Ah, here's the set. https://www.flickr.com/photos/atwitsend/2298795419
This is my sort of recipe book. "Wrap the pastry in a damp cloth and chill for 20 minutes." Don't mind if I do.
