Technical Updates to the Forum

Postby Darren » Sat May 14, 2005 09:01 pm

This thread will be used to update people when technical updates are made to the forum by Tom.

If there are specific technical things you would like to see on the forum, PM me and I will work with Tom to see if they can be done or not.

Unread Posts

Postby Darren » Sat May 14, 2005 09:04 pm

A modification has been made, so now unread topics within forums will remain unread if you log-out/close your browser window and then later on log in again. This has been done due to the amount of posts now being made to the forum, so you don't have to try and read everything in one sitting.

If you want to mark all threads within a forum as read, there is a selection to do that on the topic list at the top (just below the page number selection).

To do the same for the whole site (as used to happen when you logged out), go to the index page and select "mark all forums as read" near the bottom below the thud forums (just above the box listing who's online).

As an added bonus, this modification also seems to have corrected the problem of the new posts icon going to the wrong posts if you have used it before within a log-in for that particular topic. This is still under testing however to see if that applies in all circumstances.

PM Navigation and Signature Character Count

Postby Darren » Mon May 30, 2005 05:01 pm

Two further modifications have now been installed on the forum by our good Tom:

PM Navigation - You should now find two options near the top of the message when you read PMs, enabling you to go to the next or previous PM in your inbox (or sent items etc.). This should enable messages to be read more simply, without going via the index page each time.

Signature Character Count - In your signature (set up in your profile) you can have a maximum of 255 characters. There is now a counter just below the box where you enter the message, to let you know how many you have left. Useful for people who have large signatures (or ones with URLs etc in them), so they know when their signature is too large for the forum to accept.

Thread Merging

Postby Darren » Sun Sep 04, 2005 03:23 pm

Just to let everyone know that the capability to merge threads together (for mods and admins) has now been installed onto the forum. Hopefully this should help keep things a bit neater, especially when we end up with multiple threads on the same topic (e.g. as happened just after Clarecraft's announcement).

Search not working

The search function on the forum is currently not working properly, but it will be back and functioning in the near future.

Forum Upgrade

Postby Tom » Sat Apr 22, 2006 06:52 pm

The forum was offline for a few minutes this evening whilst it was updated - any problems should be reported to myself or the mods.

Tom.

The forum (and the whole site) was offline for more than a few minutes this afternoon due to technical issues at our hosting provider.

I'm not going to tempt fate by saying anything further.

The ability for any user to notify the mods and admins to a "problem" post has been added (the "!" button to the top-right of posts), in response to the recent spam problems.

Details of how this works are in the technical FAQ. But please note that all mods, plus Tom and Bernard will receive the email notification if you report a post, so abusing it would not be a good idea ;)
